To Chew Or Not To Chew

To Chew Or Not To Chew In Fort Collins

Hello gum chewers! In this post from The Fort Collins Dentist we’re going to talk about that sticky wad in your mouth. You know that it can freshen your breath, but can it really help guard your smile from tooth decay?

It really depends on the type of gum. Chewing regular sucrose-based gum can be helpful in removing bits of food from the surface of teeth, but that benefit is negated by the stream of sugar washing over your teeth as you chew.

However, gum with some alternative sweeteners has an added benefit for your pearly whites. Xylitol is a sweetener which not only has fewer calories than traditional sugars, but it also has antimicrobial properties that lessen plaque build-up. This means that xylitol inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes decay.

So if you’re headed out to a restaurant, bring a pack of sugar-free gum with you and pop it in your mouth when your meal is done. Of course, brushing and flossing are the ideal practices for your oral health, but when you can’t brush, select a sugarless gum with xylitol.

At The Fort Collins Dentist we offer complete general and family dentistry. Patients from Loveland, Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor also come to our office for cosmetic dentistry, and much more. Call to schedule your next checkup with us today!

How Do You Measure Success?

Affordable Loveland Tooth Bleaching

At The Fort Collins Dentist, the dental health of our patients is our number one priority each and every day. We hope that goes without saying!

How do you measure dental success? A check-up with no cavities? A perfect smile? A crown that looks as natural as the surrounding teeth?

It could mean all those things and many more.

For a child, dental success could be defined as a childhood free of cavities, learning daily dental hygiene practices, and gaining an understanding of why it’s so important.

For a young adult woman with stained but otherwise healthy teeth, dental success may be as simple as in-office teeth whitening.

For a middle-aged man who always neglected his teeth, dental success could be defined as restorative dentistry that stabilizes his condition and improves his oral health.

What about someone with several missing teeth who can only eat soft foods? Dental success might mean dental implants that make it possible to eat whatever he wants.

What are the goals for your smile? At The Fort Collins Dentist, our goal is your good dental health. We’ve improved the smiles of people in Loveland, Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor, who come to our practice for general and cosmetic dentistry, and so much more. Call to schedule an appointment to find out what we can do for your smile!

Does Your Dentist Conjure Up Cavities?

prevent cavities Fort Collins

Cavities can be filled, but it is better to prevent them in the first place. If your dentist seems to conjure up cavities at every visit, then it’s up to you to break the cycle. At The Fort Collins Dentist we are here to help you.

How can you lift the cavity curse? Call our office to schedule a checkup! Along with daily brushing and flossing, regular cleanings and checkups are the best way to ensure you have good dental health. That means clean teeth with no cavities, and pink healthy gums.

A cleaning removes any built-up plaque. Plaque is that sticky, filmy stuff that forms on teeth. It is the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease.

After the cleaning, it’s time for the checkup itself. We’ll look for any new cavities that may have appeared since your last visit. We might take X-rays, although this is not done at every visit. We’ll examine your gums, too, for any signs of gum disease.

Finally, we’ll look at your tongue, throat, face and and head, and your neck. We’re checking for swelling or redness, or any signs of cancer.

At The Fort Collins Dentist, prevention is always the best medicine. Dentists never conjure up cavities but we take care of any that might be there. People from Loveland, Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor come to us for family and cosmetic dentistry. Call us today!

Bad Breath Is No Fun

Bad Breath Is No Fun For Fort Collins Residents

This post from The Fort Collins Dentist takes on an unpleasant topic: bad breath.

Imagine you are starting a new job and are going to meet with your new boss for the first time. Confidence is key to your success. As you reach out to shake the extended hand your broad confident smile exposes rows of pearly white teeth, yet when you open your mouth to exchange greetings you worry about bad breath.

The technical term for bad breath is halitosis. Many behaviors and health conditions can cause or exacerbate halitosis. One of these factors is the food you eat. Onions and garlic are both known for having a potent effect on your breath.

Brushing and flossing daily is a critical step in curing bad breath. Food particles can build up in your mouth and foster bacteria which can cause bad breath. This not only includes the food particles that may get stuck between your teeth, but also the food that collects around your gums or on your tongue. Brushing and flossing daily can help reduce the number of food particles that stay in your mouth and cause bad breath.

Other factors to think about include dry mouth, tobacco use, and health concerns such as infections.

At The Fort Collins Dentist, your dental health is always our top priority. People from Loveland, Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor come to us for general and family dentistry, TMJ/TMD treatment, and much more. Schedule an appointment today!

5 Critical Oral Cancer Facts

oral cancer dental checkup Fort CollinsAt The Fort Collins Dentist we want to see our patients at least twice a year for a checkup and cleaning. A checkup can give you real peace of mind, especially since every one we do includes an oral cancer screening.

Lung and breast cancer get a lot of public attention, and rightfully so. But there is less awareness of oral cancer, even though it claims almost 10,000 lives in the United States every year.

Oral cancer claims almost 10,000 lives in the United States every year. If you smoke or have contracted HPV, you have a higher risk for developing oral cancer.

Here are five critical things to know about oral (mouth) and oropharyngeal (back of mouth and throat) cancers.

  1. About 80% of men and women with oral cancer use some type of tobacco (cigarettes, chewing tobacco, pipes).
  2. 40% of those who receive late-stage diagnosis of oral cancer pass away within five years. The survival rate for early stage diagnosis is 90%.
  3. In many cases, it is difficult for someone to detect oral and oropharyngeal cancers on their own, because they can produce indistinct symptoms or no symptoms at all. Any abnormality in the mouth or throat, even if small and painless, should be evaluated by a dentist or doctor.
  4. HPV (the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the US) is the most common cause of oropharyngeal cancer. Of the many strains of HPV, HPV16 is the one most often linked to oropharyngeal cancer.
  5. African American men have a higher risk of dying from oral cancer than do whites.

At The Fort Collins Dentist we screen for oral cancer at every checkup. People from Loveland, Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor come to us for dental implants, complete general and family dentistry, and much more. Schedule your next checkup today!

Royalty At The Fort Collins Dentist

porcelain crown Fort Collins

When we place a dental crown on one of our patients at The Fort Collins Dentist, the coronation is a celebration of a stronger smile.

The need for a dental crown is usually apparent. Crowns (sometimes called caps) restore a decayed or damaged tooth to its original size, shape, and functionality.

Crowns are sometimes extended down to a tooth’s root surface. Most often, though, they replace the top portion of the tooth – also known as the crown, hence the name of the restoration.

Dental crowns are custom-made for each tooth. Once a crown is cemented permanently into place, they strengthen what was a weakened tooth. They prevent cracked teeth from cracking any further and provide support to teeth that have large, existing fillings.

Dental crowns from The Fort Collins Dentist are an excellent solution for damaged teeth. We have placed them in patients from Loveland, Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor, who also come to our practice for dental implants and much more. Call our officce to schedule a checkup today!

Do You Eat A Smile-Healthy Diet?

Fort Collins teeth bleaching best price

This article from The Fort Collins Dentist explains how specific foods and eating habits influence our teeth.

The Sugar Problem
Sugars get converted by bacteria in the mouth to acids. It is the acids that begin to assault enamel and initiate decay for people of all ages. Fruits have high water content which can dilute the effects of the sugars they contain and get the saliva flowing so they aren’t really no-no’s. It’s the chocolate bars, hard candies, cookies, cakes and pies that are.

Acidic Food Coupling
Oranges, tomatoes, lemons and the like should be eaten as part of a meal to limit the acidic effects. It is a good idea to eat a variety of healthy foods such as cheeses, chicken, other meats, nuts and milk. The calcium and phosphorus will advance tooth remineralization.

Timing of Meals
The more frequently you eat the more often your teeth are subject to the decay process. This can be moderated by deciding on healthy snacks. And keep in mind, the later at night you eat the more likely you are to not only eat unhealthy foods, but to skip oral hygiene altogether.

The real trick is to keep your teeth clean! Brush and floss after eating, and see The Fort Collins Dentist for regular checkups. People from Loveland, Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor come to our practice for dental implants, complete general and family dentistry, and all their dental health needs.
