We Understand Dental Anxiety

Enjoy sedation dentistry in Fort Collins.

Dental professionals in the Fort Collins area (including the team at the Fort Collins Dentist) are dedicated to oral health. Unfortunately, some individuals rarely go to the dentist. Others have the misconception that you only need to go to the dentist when you have a toothache.

In addition, there are those who have severe dental anxiety. Perhaps you fall into this category.

Dental anxiety is real, we get it.

If you are apprehensive about dental visits, here are a few guidelines that may help ease you into scheduled dental checkups. Certainly, enriched oral health will elevate your quality of life.

Choose a dentist you can trust.

We understand how difficult it can be to seek dental treatment. That’s why we make sure patients are comfortable before we examine their teeth. First, we ask you many questions. We want to get to know you, and help you get to know us. Communication builds a connection. A connection leads to a trusting relationship.

The more we know about you, the easier we can help you.

Be prepared to provide us with important information about your lifestyle and health. Many individuals are intimidated at a dentist’s office. Because of this, they may hesitate to disclose sensitive issues.

We are here to help, regardless of your history or oral condition.

There is nothing in your past that we haven’t dealt with. Neglecting oral health. Drug use. Eating disorders. Regardless of your history, we have helped patients with similar issues.

In order to help you, we need complete accurate information. Bring notes if you are worried that you will forget something.

Also, during treatment, tell us what you are experiencing so we can help you feel more relaxed. If we find that you are going to need a dental procedure more extensive than filling a cavity, let’s discuss sleep dentistry.

Oral sedation is safe and effective.

The most important thing to know is that oral conscious sedation or sleep dentistry is perfectly safe. At The Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry, we have been providing sedation since 2016. We offer different levels of sedation and a choice of medication including oral analgesics, nitrous oxide, and IV sedation.

At The Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry, our compassionate staff will work to make your visit as pleasant as possible.

Keeping You Comfortable

Enjoy the benefits of sleep dentistry in Loveland.

At the Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry, we make a conscious effort to help our patients feel comfortable. Though our chairs are cushy as can be, we are not only talking about physical comfort here. We are talking about emotional comfort. In other words, peace of mind.

Here are four ways we are enthusiastic about your peace of mind:

1. We don’t judge you. Doctor Allison Lesko has devoted a professional career to promoting oral health and creating beautiful smiles.

The friendly dental team at The Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry is here to help you, regardless of the state of your teeth. We have treated patients with severe tooth neglect, advanced gum disease, enamel erosion caused by eating disorders, tooth damage caused by illegal drug use, baby bottle tooth decay, tobacco-stained teeth: basically, every imaginable dental problem. We don’t live in a bubble. We understand and empathize with our patients.

2. We protect you from pain. From topical analgesics to oral conscious sedation, we will eliminate or minimize pain as best we can. doctor Lesko is a pro at administering barely noticeable injections.

3. We help you with your dental anxiety. Fear of the dentist is far more common than you might realize and certainly nothing to be ashamed of. The perceived loss of control, instruments poking in your mouth, and teeth being worked on are not pleasant. Some individuals get claustrophobic because they need to lie still in the chair for treatment.

Sleep dentistry (oral conscious sedation) not only helps with pain management, it allows you to sleep through your appointment. There are different levels of sedation, so you don’t have to be completely unconscious unless you want to be. If you would like more specifics about sedation, call 970-221-5115 to schedule a consultation. We can talk about the different levels of oral conscious sedation so you can select the one that is best for you.

4. We communicate with you.
Doctor Lesko has established a reputation as an effective and compassionate communicator. Procedures are thoroughly explained and all your vital questions will be answered prior to treatment. If you are not sure you want to initiate treatment, we are happy to let you think about it for a while. There is no rush.

If you have postponed dental treatment for any reason, we encourage you to give Doctor Lesko and the team at The Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry a try. Neglecting your oral health has serious consequences. Call today to schedule an appointment. We look forward to meeting you.

Don’t Let Fear Of The Dentist Compromise Your Oral Health

sleep dental Fort Collins

If you have claustrophobia, you avoid cave exploration. If you have acrophobia (fear of heights), you avoid sky diving. In either case, you can live a fulfilling life without participating in these activities.

What if you have dentophobia or a fear of the dentist? (Yes, it’s a real thing with an official name.) This is different than the phobias mentioned previously. Since dental visits are critical for dental health, it’s not a smart move to simply avoid dental treatment.

Yet many people try to do just that. That is, until they have a problem that gets so painful they are forced to white knuckle it through a dental visit. At that point, the treatment may be an extraction that could have been prevented with earlier intervention or preventative procedures.

If you are plagued with severe anxiety when undergoing dental treatment, oral sedation is for you. Whether it is called relaxation dentistry, oral conscious sedation, sleep dentistry, or anxiety-free dentistry, it has proven to be safe and effective.

Dentophobia is complex and may be accompanied by any of the following:

  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Fear of needles
  • A powerful gag reflex
  • Difficulty in controlling body movement
  • Difficulty becoming numb with standard injections

With oral conscious sedation, dentistry patients can relax or even sleep through dental treatment.

You decide on the degree of sedation needed:

  • Mild sedation: relaxes you while you remain conscious.
  • Moderate sedation: provides a deeper level of relaxation with partial consciousness.
  • Deep sedation: you are almost entirely unconscious but can be awakened.
  • General anesthesia: This sends you to dreamland from which you awake after it’s over with no memory of the service.

Toothache Relief at The Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry in Fort Collins

urgent dental clinic Fort Collins

A toothache is probably the most common dental problem. However, they have multiple causes. A toothache can come on gradually–or attack with full force.

1. You sip a cold drink and–bam!–tooth pain.

When a cavity has eroded enamel it eventually contacts the layer underneath. This is called the dentin. This layer is softer than enamel and is filled with tiny tubules. A cold (or acidic) beverage that seeps into the tubules can hit the nerve (or get close enough) to make you cringe. If this happens to you, call our office today. You may have a serious cavity. If you get treatment ASAP, you may save the tooth.

2. You bite down hard–ouch!

Tooth pain that accompanies biting could indicate an infection or abscess in the pulp of the tooth. It could also stem from a microscopic crack. Regardless of the cause, you need to have it taken care of. Otherwise, you could lose the tooth.

3. Wait a minute–is something moving around in there?

Unless you are a kindergartener excited for the tooth fairy, it’s not a good sign to suddenly feel that a tooth is loose. In an adult, it could be the result of an injury to the tooth. The jolt could have stretched some of the small ligaments. These are the cords that hold the tooth in place. Perhaps you can’t recall bumping your tooth or mouth. In this is the case, you could have a nighttime tooth grinding issue. Teeth grinding is dangerous for teeth and it can trigger headaches as well.

Another possibility is gingivitis. Periodontal disease is caused by a bacterial infection that can destroy both gum tissue and the ligaments that hold the teeth in place. This advanced form of gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Don’t ignore a toothache!

Waiting too long to care for your teeth can result in health dilemmas—and not just in your mouth. If you have a toothache, loose tooth, or other pressing dental issue, we encourage you to call our office today to schedule an appointment.

We offer sedation dentistry

If you have dental anxiety, at The Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry we understand. Many of our patients experience dental anxiety or complete dental phobia. We offer sedation and anti-anxiety medications to help you get through your treatment.

4 Reasons To Make Sure Your Child Sees A Dentist

Wellington family dentist

Did you know that The American Dental Association recommends that a child’s first visit to a dentist should occur around twelve months of age?

For many parents in the Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor areas, this may come as a surprise. Today in the Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry post, we are going to review 4 reasons why your toddler’s teeth are worth a dental visit.

1. Twelve months of age happens to be about the time when a little one’s first teeth tend to erupt. Once those teeth are out, it’s time to get them looked at by a professional.

2. One of the critical things your dentist will do at this visit will be to clean those young teeth and apply fluoride.

3. Visiting the dentist at a young age is a great way to help your child get used to the dentist’s office. This will help them to be more relaxed with the dentist as they grow older.

4. Visiting the dentist also helps parents enlist the help of other adults in creating good dental habits in their children. Starting early dental visits will mean that later in life your child is less likely to require braces or other dentistry procedures such as dental implants.

If your child is apprehensive about visiting the dentist, you might want to bring them for a short tour of our office beforehand. They can meet our friendly staff and learn what to expect when they come in for their exam.

At The Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry we offer:

dental implants
sleep apnea
cosmetic dentistry
sedation dentistry

Peace Begins With A Smile

Timnath cosmetic dental veneers

Mother Theresa once said “Peace begins with a smile.” Perhaps that peace should start with the person who is smiling. How do you feel about your smile? Are you at peace with it? Are you proud to flash a wide, happy grin? Do you believe it is beautiful? Does it express your best self? Let’s talk about your smile.

Bright eyes and bright smiles are best served clear and clean. Regular check ups with your local dental provider can prevent runaway decay and costly corrections. Stay at peace with your smile by scheduling regular dental visits to avoid any future oral problems.

Rest assured that there are ways to redo what nature has given you or cosmetically remedy problems that have affected your once-pleasant smile. Talk to a cosmetic dentist to learn how you can achieve a smile you can be at peace with. For information about veneers, bridges, dental implants, Invisalign braces, visit https://www.thefortcollins.dentist/.

I’m Doctor Allison Lesko with The Fort Collins Dentist Family & Implant Dentistry located in Fort Collins at 2001 S Shields St Bldg L. Afraid of the Dentist? 4 Ways to Reduce Dental Anxiety

dental anxiety treatment Fort Collins

If you tense up just thinking about going to the dentist, you may benefit from sedation dentistry offered by The Fort Collins Dentist.

Millions of Americans stress out when they have to see the dentist. It is referred to as dental anxiety. There is a more severe form, too, called dental phobia. In both, some people would rather skip the dentist altogether, rather than sit down for a checkup. The problem with that, of course, is it puts their dental health at risk.

Whatever the cause, sedation dentistry has helped millions of people get through their appointments.

We offer two types, as well as two suggestions for a calm visit. In total, that’s four ways to reduce dental anxiety! Check our solutions out below:

  1. Nitrous Oxide: You also know this as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for more than a century and is highly effective.
  2. IV Sedation: As the name suggests, this is a sedative that is administered intravenously. You won’t sleep with this, but will be in a deeply relaxed state. You’ll need an escort for a ride here and back.
  3. Meditation: This is a good way to clear your mind of negative thoughts before an appointment.
  4. A Good Night’s Sleep: Being well-rested can help calm frayed nerves.

Don’t compromise your dental health by skipping the dentist! Sedation dentistry from The Fort Collins Dentist may be just for you. Patients from Loveland, Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor come to us for general and restorative dentistry. Contact us today!

Worried About Dental Visits?

sleep dentistry Loveland

Good dental health is important to overall health, but there are some people who would do almost anything but sit down for an appointment. If anxiety or even phobia keeps you away from regular checkups, sedation dentistry from The Fort Collins Dentist can help.

There are lots of reasons why people avoid the dentist. It may stem from a bad childhood experience or a fear of pain. It may be from concerns about X-rays or some other common dental procedure. Whatever it is, don’t put your dental health at risk by never going to the dentist.

Modern dentistry is safe and painless. If you’re concerned about something like X-rays, we can accommodate you. The important thing is to have regular checkups, and to have any dental health issues treated.

We have two types of sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide. Commonly called laughing gas, nitrous oxide has a long and successful history as a dental sedative. It works quickly and wears off quickly.
  • IV Sedation. This is a stronger form of sedation that is administered in the arm. You won’t sleep, but will be in a deep state of relaxation: so much so that you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

If you have been putting off seeing the dentist because of anxiety or phobia, sedation dentistry from The Fort Collins Dentist can help. Patients from Loveland, Timnath, Wellington, and Windsor rely on us for complete general and family dentistry, and much more. Schedule an appointment with us today!

In both, some people would rather skip the dentist altogether than sit down for a checkup. The problem with that, of course, is it puts their dental health at risk.

There are lots of reasons why people develop anxiety or phobia over dental care. It often stems from a bad experience they had with a dentist as a kid. Fear of pain may be involved, as well as a fear of anesthesics and possible side effects.

Whatever the cause, sedation dentistry has helped millions of people get through their appointments.

We offer three types:

Nitrous Oxide. You also know this as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for more than a century and is highly effective.

Oral conscious sedation. You take a sedative an hour or so before the appointment. You won’t sleep, but will be in a deeply relaxed state. When the appointment is over, someone will have to drive you home.
